Tips and Tricks for a newbie Malaysian student in Dublin (Economy version)

 Hey Guys,

I will just list some things that you should really do when or even before you arrive in Dublin. 

1. Ask your university for a letter stating your address if you don't have a utility bill. You will definitely need one when you try to open a bank account. 

I stay in student sharing hostel, and I used a letter from them. However, it got rejected .

2. Get a mobile number as soon as you land. Make sure that they register your name and passport/ID. 

I MADE A MISTAKE.  I bought a sim from the terminal 1 at the airport,  I did not realise that she did not ask for any identification and it didn't come in the fancy first time sim packaging. But I was exhausted, and I did not realise something was wrong. Anyway, I did the top up and all, and I tried to register my name with the phone company and I realised it was registered under someone's name. I did not lose money.  I still manage to use the top up for a full month. 

The problem is because I had to use that number to register for banks, insurance etc. I'm getting a NEW sim tomorrow and I will go thru the hassle of changing my hp number with the banks, insurance and what not. 

So make sure you get a sim from an actual telco store. I use the company called THREE. Buy from their physical store. There are plenty. A few in Mary Street. 

GOMO is good too if you use less than 10 GB of Data. 

Honestly, I am still so upset that the airport doesn't have a proper sim card store. 

3. I bought a Medicover insurance for 150 euros. But remember, my study is for less than 12 months.

When you buy it, it will ask if you are a student (stamp 2) or graduate (stamp 1G).

Even though you are coming here for a master or PhD, put student. The graduate option is for those who completed their studies in Ireland and are applying to stay back in Ireland and work here. 

Check their immigration office website. 

4. If you want to buy anything (not clothing related), go to DEALZ store first!!!!!!

I repeat!

Go to DEALZ store first! It is almost like a dollar store. 

If you cannot find what you want in Dealz, then head to Primark or Dunnes.
